Rebuild Ukraine Business Conference – November 21-22, 2023 – Toronto, Canada

On Tuesday, November 21st and Wednesday, November 22nd, 2023 Canada-Ukraine Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Business Council of Canada, Embassy of Ukraine
in Canada, Embassy of Canada in Ukraine, Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, CEO Club Ukraine  and UkraineInvest organized a two-day Rebuild Ukraine Business Conference and Ukraine by Design Tech Conference at The Omni King Edward Hotel located at 37 King Street East in Toronto, ON.

Rebuild Ukraine Business Conference on November 21st, 2023  showcased investment projects aimed at rebuilding and modernizing Ukraine in the agriculture,construction/infrastructure, energy and healthcare sectors. Morning session included opening remarks by Zenon Potichny, President of CUCC, Goldy Hyder, President and CEO of Business Council of Canada, Yulia Svyrydenko, First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Economy of Ukraine and Rostyslav Shurma, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine. Attendees learned about how Business Ombudsman’s Office, National Bank of Ukraine, UkraineInvest, CEO Club Ukraine and American Chamber of Commerce contribute to economic resilience of Ukraine during war, as well as how Canadian businesses like Cameco and Razom Invest Canada operate in Ukraine. The afternoon session highlighted the financial  instruments and insurance offered by the IFC, EBRD and EDC to support Canadian companies interested in investing in Ukraine, included presentation of UCANPRO (ProZorro procurement platform adapted for Canadian businesses) as well as a fireside chat with the Honorable Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development of Canada, Taras Kachka, Deputy Minister for Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine and Zenon Potichny, President of CUCC dedicated to the Modernization of Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement.

Ukraine by Design Tech Conference on November 22nd, 2023 showcased Ukrainian digital government tool DIIA, as well Ukrainian companies and organizations that operate in IT, Fintech and Military Tech and contribute to Ukraine’s tech and economic resistance during war. Conference was opened by remarks from Markiyan Vytvytskyy, Vice-President of CUCC, Yuliya Kovaliv, Ambassador of Ukraine to Canada, Natalka Cmoc, Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine, greetings from Mykhailo Fedorov, Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine and Eric Caire, Minister of Cybersecurity and Digital Technology of Quebec, as well as a keynote speech from Oleksandr Bornyakov, Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine.

The Rebuild Ukraine Business Conference served as an ideal platform for Canadian businesses seeking involvement in the reconstruction of Ukraine. It also provided an excellent opportunity for networking among Canadian and Ukrainian businesses, financial institutions, and agencies.

“Empowering Radiance” exhibition – Radiance that gives strength

Kyiv, November 3, 2023. The charity exhibitionEmpoweringRadianceto support women serving in the Armed Forces ofUkraine was held in PJSC «Toronto-Kyiv». The eventfeatured works of 23 prominent women representatives of thenuclear power industry. The goal of the fundraising campaign as the main part of the charity event was support of women servingin the Armed Forces of Ukraine. All the money raised by the event will go for purchase of the women’s military ammunition, clothing, footwear, protective equipment, and the humanitarianaid.

This initiative was implemented through joint efforts of the Non-profitable Public Organizations «Women in Nuclear Ukraine» and“Ukrainian Nuclear Society”. PJSC «Toronto-Kyiv», «TK Property Management» LTD and Public Organization «SobornaUkraine» were the general partners, who played a key role inmaking this event happen.

We still have a long road ahead of us on all fronts, and thus, allof us have to be united as never before in our diversified fight forfreedom and for our common goals. Tabling of the modernized Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (CUFTA)

On October 17th, 2023  CUCC President Zenon Potichny and CUCC Director Lesia Babiak had a pleasure of attending the tabling of the modernized Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (CUFTA) by Minister Mary Ng at the Parliament Hill and parliamentary reception hosted by Yvan Baker, MP.

The modernized Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (CUFTA) is a significant step towards strengthening of bilateral ties between Canada and Ukraine. It sets a path to further eliminate trade barriers, open up new avenues for businesses in both countries and engage Canadian businesses in the rebuilding of Ukraine.

We would like to thank Minister Mary Ng and Government of Canada for their continuous support for Ukraine, its people and economy.

CUCC is looking forward to supporting the implementation of the modernized CUFTA and Minister Ng’s business mission to Ukraine in 2024.

 

Modernization of Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement

On September 22, 2023 Canada-Ukraine Chamber of Commerce President Zenon Potichny and Vice-President Markiyan Markevych attended signing of modernization of Canada-Ukraine Free trade Agreement by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau.

The new trade agreement will replace the existing CUFTA agreement, which has been in force since 2017. Here are some of the highlights of the modernized CUFTA agreement:

  • Application of a new liberal method in the service sector – everything that is not forbidden is allowed
  • The protection of business interests has been strengthened through the use of a modern set of legal instruments for investment protection
  • Added section on digital trade between Ukraine and Canada, based on the principles of free and open development of the digital ecosystem of the economy
  • Goods made from parts manufactured in EU, Britain, Israel can now be exported from Ukraine to Canada free of duty
  • Expanded and simplified conditions for the temporary entry of Ukrainian business travelers to Canada for the purpose of providing services

The text of the document is based on the standards of the Free Trade Agreement between Canada, the United States and Mexico (NAFTA) and the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, which Ukraine is preparing to join.

 

Ukrhydroenergo and Aecon Group Inc. sign a Memorandum of Understanding

We are thrilled to announce a significant milestone in the energy sector! On September 22, 2023  Ukrhydroenergo and Canadian Aecon Group Inc. signed a memorandum of cooperation, marking the beginning of a strategic partnership.

This partnership paves the way for the construction of hydroelectric power plants in Ukraine, including the Kaniv PSPP and Kakhovka HPP.

CUCC attends a Business Roundtable with President Zelenskyy during his historic visit to Canada

On September 22, 2023 President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a historic visit to Canada.

During his address to Canada’s House of Commons President Zelenskyy has thanked Canada for being one of the most longstanding partners and supporters of Ukraine and called upon Canada and its allies to stand by Ukraine as it fights back against russia to protect its freedom.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced additional $650M in military aid to Ukraine and said that Canada’s support for Ukraine is unwavering and will last as long as it is needed.

During this visit Vice-President of Canada-Ukraine Chamber of Commerce Mark Vytvytskyy had a pleasure of attending a roundtable with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister  Justin Trudeau, Deputy Prime Minisiter  Chrystia Freeland and leaders of Canadian business community Mairead LaveryBobby KwonKyle JeworskiDave McKayAnuj RanjanBharat MasraniNeelam SandhuTim GitzelDeb Barnes.

The roundtable attendees discussed the united support of all G7 countries to create a more secure investment environment in Ukraine, looking at de-risking mechanisms and finding financial instruments that can attract investment and private capital.

Mark Vytvytskyy emphasized CUCC’s role as a platform that connects businesses and government, enabling Canadian businesses, investors, and exporters to actively participate in Ukraine’s reconstruction.

He has also reminded participants to mark their calendars with Rebuild Ukraine Business Conference on November 21-22, 2023 at the Omni King Edward Hotel in Toronto.

Apparel Textile Sourcing Show in Toronto, Canada

From August 21-23, 2023 Canada-Ukraine Chamber of Commerce participated in Apparel Textile Sourcing Show at the Toronto Congress Centre in Mississauga, Canada. ATSS is the largest international sourcing event focused on the Canadian and North American Apparel, Textile, and Fashion sectors. It showcased 200+ exhibitors from the world’s major manufacturing countries supplying the Canadian apparel market with Finished Apparel, Textiles, Fabrics, and Fashion.

CUCC Team organized a Made in Ukraine Pavilion and represented four Ukrainian companies that due to current travel restrictions were not able to represent themselves at the show. These companies include:

17th Annual CUCC Golf Tournament

On June 27th Canada Ukraine Chamber of Commerce hosted the 17th CUCC Annual Golf Tournament at Lionhead Golf and Country Club. We would like to thank all of the participants, who despite the rainy weather showed up and made the tournament a huge success.
