Site Tour Options

Morning

Option 1: Edmonton Waste Management Centre

Departure: 8:45 am Return to Hotel: 12:45 pm

(maximum of 20 persons)

The Edmonton Waste Management Centre is North America’s largest collection of modern, sustainable waste processing and research facilities. Includes advanced recycling and composting facilities, a landfill gas recovery system, a biofuels facility (currently under construction), and a research and development facility (a unique public-private partnership to advance research, technology demonstration, and training in waste management.

Option 2: Agri-Food Discovery Place, University of Alberta

Departure: 10:00 am Return to Hotel: 12:30 p.m.

(maximum of 10-15 persons)

A world-class bio-product processing facility, dedicated to applied research activities in the areas of food safety, ag-industrial technologies, functional food and natural health products, and facilitating commercializable opportunities through initial stages of the value chain. Home of the Crop Utilization and Enhanced Materials Research Unit and the Containment Level II Meat Safety and Processing Research Unit.

Afternoon

Option 1: Alberta Government Food Processing Centre at Leduc

Departure: 1:00 p.m. Return to Hotel: 5:00 p.m.

(maximum of 10 persons)

Modern, fully equipped pilot plant and product development laboratory facility. Designed to strengthen and expand capability of Alberta’s food processing to meet the challenges of the marketplace through application of new technologies and the development of new or improved products and processes. Tour of lab and pilot plant facilities and Agrivalue Processing Business Incubator.

Option 2: NAIT’s Encana Centre for Power Engineering Technology

Departure: 1:30 pm Return to Hotel: 3:00 p.m.

(maximum of 20 persons)

Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) provides hands on training on such cutting edge equipment as a digital simulator, a fuel cell lab and a number of gas and steam turbines. Demonstration of the operation of the small fuel cell, the power engineering lab and the turbines.


Option 3: Alberta Research Council in Vegreville

Part of Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures

Departure 12:30 pm Return to Hotel: 5:30 p.m.

(maximum of 15 persons)

Alberta Research Council provides partnerships and support to quickly turn critical research into products, processes and services, and move technologies to market. Tour will focus on: 1)new Alberta bio-materials centre (the making of textile fibres from hemp); 2)bio-char – material made by partial combustion of bio-mass; and 3)plant genomics – new species and varieties for specific purposes, e.g. drought-resistant plants.
