ARTHUR R. SAWCHUK

Arthur R. Sawchuk now retired as Chairman of the Board of Manulife Financial, having joined the Board of Directors in 1993.
Mr. Sawchuk retired from DuPont Canada Inc. at the end of 1997 after almost six years as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, and 40 years with DuPont Canada where he held various managerial positions and worked with several business units. From October 1997, he was Chief Executive Officer of Avenor Inc., a forest products, pulp and paper company, until its acquisition in July 1998 by Bowater Inc.
A native of Dauphin, Manitoba, upon graduation from the University of Manitoba with a BSc in Mechanical Engineering, Mr. Sawchuk joined the company's engineering group in Kingston, Ontario in 1958. During the next several years, he served in technical, marketing and sales functions with the fibres organization in Kingston and Toronto. Mr. Sawchuk was transferred to Montreal in 1967, where he held managerial positions in fibres marketing.
He moved to Toronto in 1974 as Division Manager, Home Furnishings. In 1981, he was named Manager, Corporate Planning & Development and in 1984 became Division Manager, Packaging. He became Vice-President and General Manager, Fibres & Intermediate Chemicals and an officer of the Company in 1985. Three years later, he became Senior Vice-President and a member of the Corporate Policy Committee. In 1992, Mr. Sawchuk became President, Chief Executive Officer and Director at DuPont Canada Inc., and then in 1995 additionally assumed the role of Executive Chairman.
Mr. Sawchuk was an industry representative on the Textiles, Shoes and Leather Sectoral Advisory Group on International Trade from 1987 through 1992. In this role, he advised the Federal Government of Canada, U.S., Mexico and Multilateral Trade Negotiations. In addition, Mr. Sawchuk has previously been a member of the Prime Minister's Advisory Committee on Business/Government Executive Exchange and the Natural Resources Canada Minister's Advisory Council on Industrial Energy Efficiency.
Mr. Sawchuk is currently a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario. He is a past member of the Policy Committee of the Business Council on National Issues (BCNI), where he was chairman of the BCNI Task Force on the Environment until his retirement (BCNI is now called the Canadian Council of Chief Executives). He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Bowater Inc., Manulife Financial, Manitoba Telecom Services Inc., The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and the Canada Ukraine Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Sawchuk and his wife, Mary, reside in Toronto. They have a daughter, a son, three grandsons and one granddaughter.
